Preparing for an operation (adults)

Around three weeks prior to your operation appointment you will be sent confirmation documents by post (in an anonymous envelope).

  • Once you have confirmed the date of your operation with us, you must refrain from smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol 14 days before the operation. This is not merely an oft-repeated cliché; conforming will have a decisive effect on the results. By constricting the surface blood vessels, smoking has a strong, negative effect on the healing process, whereas alcohol adversely affects the metabolism.
  • During the 10 days prior to the operation you must refrain from taking aspirin, ASS or other blood-thinning medications, which increase the risk of haematomas (bruising) or unpleasant swellings occurring.
  • A talk will be arranged with one of our doctors giving you ample time to ask any questions you may have. Beforehand and as preparation, please read our descriptive brochure on the operation.
  • On the day of your operation you must not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before it commences – this applies for cases using local anaesthetic as well.
  • You will then be prepared for the operation and given a mild sedative along with a pain-killer.
  • Afterwards, the operation will commence in a relaxed and easy atmosphere; there is no need to worry because you won’t feel any pain, while the medication you were given has been carefully chosen to make you rapidly feel fit again, with no unpleasant memories, once the procedure is over with.
  • You would usually be able to return home after 1-2 hours (if treated as an out-patient). However, because you would not be allowed to drive due to the medication, and as many patients have quite a distance to travel, we recommend that you stay overnight in a nearby hotel – which is also cheaper than staying at the clinic.
